Unit 5: Investigating Audio Production and Technology

Assignment 2 – To be able to plan and present solutions to an audio-based problem within a computer game.

You are an apprenticeship games designer working for a small games developer in the East Midlands.

Your manager has asked you to identify how you can improve audio within a game. You would need to present both the problem and solutions to your manager before you go and create and apply sounds to the game to demonstrate whether your solutions work or not.

Learning Outcomes Unit 5:

LO2 Be able to use an integrated approach to audio-based creative media problem solving and production.
2.1 Demonstrate the ability to plan, organise and present solutions to an audio-based problem in creative media production.
2.2 Apply practical skills, understanding and methods to solve an audio-based problem in creative media production.


LO3 Be able to evaluate solutions to an audio-based problem in creative media production
3.1 Analyse the effectiveness of solutions to an audio based problem in creative media production.

Task
Find and analyse at least one audio based problem or challenge within your own computer game.


1. Create a report/video/presentation which clearly shows your research of your problem or challenge using for example quantitative, qualitative, primary and secondary research.
Your report/video/presentation must also include potential technical and creative solutions for your problem.
You must first produce a realistic timeline of both research and discovering potential solutions to your chosen problem or challenge.

2. Plan, record and edit appropriate sounds (Music & FX), which compliment your game and resolve the problem or challenge you researched.

3. Test your game with the added sounds, gain feedback, and evaluate whether the sounds you have created solve the problem/challenge you had discovered and researched.

Do use previous class exercises and your first Assignment to help you.

Theory and research to consider could include quantitative, qualitative, primary, secondary and hertz, frequency, pitch, timbre, foley, and metaphors where relevant.
